Static Websites

E-mail Print PDF

Simply put a static website is developed either with a software tool such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage or written directly in a language such as "HTML" or "XHTML".  Once written you then upload that page to your web server to make it available on your website.  If you want to change a page you then have to amend the relevant page and upload it again to replace the original.  This differs to a "content management system" whereby you can log into your website and make changes to it online via a word processing like interface.

Should I choose a Static site or use a Content Management System?

Opting for a static site makes sense in certain circumstances.  If you have a small budget, need a small site and only very occassionally plan to make changes to its content then a static site may well be for you.  In other cases, again where you are not planning a huge site but where you need very tight control over the design from page to page and over the code a static site may also make more sense.

If however you are planning a larger site, wish to add to it or change content regularly then a Content Management System makes more sense.  Setting up a Content Management System may take longer in some cases to set up and configure than simple sites written in XHTML so there may be more of an initial outlay. However if you require regular updates to your site content then it definatey makes sense to take control of your own site - not least because you do not have to be reliant on a third party on an ongoing basis to support you.

Developing a Static Site

Prior to developing even a simple static site it's highly desirable to have thought through even a basic online strategy.  Who is the site targetted at, how will you reach this audience and how will you engage them once they get to you?

In addition to implementing your site technically (via programming in XHTML, CSS or using Dreamweaver etc) you also need to consider how your site will be configured.  For example you need to consider the "information architecture" - how information is categorised and what format the navigation through your site should take. You also need to consider the design, develop a content strategy and to have at least a basic understanding of how your site will be indexed by search engines and how you can promote your site to them.  Other issues include what functionality to include on your site, the accessibility of your site (e.g. to visitors using speech readers) and usability issues.

Services Offered

During my initial discussions with new clients it generally becomes very clear as to whether a static site or Content Management System would best suit your requirements.

Typically I work with a freelance graphic designer if you require a bespoke design for your site.  If however you are on a budget an option to consider is the purchase (for non exclusive use) of a design template online.  Buying a design template can drastically cut down on costs, deliver a professional looking website and drastically speed up the development process.
